Part of the initial Atlantis Expedition, Hays was a scientist stationed at the base. After the storm had passed Atlantis, Hays along with Rodney McKay, Aiden Ford and Radek Zelenka went to survey the damage that had been caused on a flooded pier, during which time he became irritated with McKay and Zalenka's prime numbers game.

Coming in contact with Dumais, Hays along with McKay were infected with a nano-virus, before any of the other members of the survey team. Hays and McKay soon started to hallucinate, however with McKay's gene therapy he managed to survive, unfortunately, Hays without the Ancient Gene was unable to overcome it's effects and was killed.
