Those who inhabit the Cloister planet do it only for one reason, to hopefully one day achieve Ascension, where they can leave their bodies and join the Ancients that came before them. Those that were having trouble finding ascension were ultimately helped by Sheppard who gave them the courage to fight their fears, leading to their ascension.
